Issuing a Prescription

Issuing a Prescription

Once a medication has been issued to a patient, it can be prescribed using the prescription flow. This is a separate step from issuing the medication itself.

Prerequisites

Before issuing a prescription, the medication must already exist on the patient's record. Use Issue Medication to add medications first (see the Managing Medications article).

How to Get There

  • Patient sidebar > Issue Prescription quick action
  • Medication tab > Issue Prescription button
  • Within a consultation > Prescribe action button

Step 1: Select Medications

Search and select from the patient's medications. For each medication, specify:

  • Quantity to supply
  • Directions for use

You can add multiple medications to a single prescription.

Step 2: Review Patient Details

Review and update the patient's contact information. The prescribing service requires:

  • Email address
  • Phone number
  • Postal address
  • Date of birth and gender

Any missing fields must be completed before proceeding.

Step 3: Issue Details

Configure how the prescription is issued:

  • Prescriber - select the issuing clinician from the registered prescribers list
  • Notes - optional notes for the prescription
  • Issue method - choose how the prescription is handled:
Method Description
Draft Save without issuing
Collection Issue for patient collection
Contact Issue to a selected contact (e.g. pharmacy)
Delivery Issue for delivery
Issue Only Issue without a specific fulfilment method
  • Prescriber PIN - required for all non-draft actions (6-digit PIN)
  • Patient notifications - toggle email and/or SMS notifications to the patient (non-draft only)

Step 4: Confirmation

After submission, a success screen confirms the prescription has been created and shows a summary of the medications, issue method, and any notifications sent.

Switch to Print mode (via the tab at the top) to generate a printable prescription PDF instead of issuing electronically. The print flow allows you to:

  • Select medications
  • Choose the prescriber
  • Preview the PDF
  • Print directly

Tip: Always issue the medication to the patient's record first, then use this flow to create the prescription.

Note: Electronic prescribing requires Signature Rx to be connected. See the Signature Rx article in Integrations & Apps for setup instructions.
