Clinical coding

Clinical coding is the practice of recording diagnoses, findings, procedures and other clinical information using a standardised terminology, such as SNOMED CT, rather than free text.

Coded data can be searched, audited and reported on reliably in a way free text cannot, because the system understands what a coded entry actually represents rather than just storing a string of characters.
