Structured clinical data

Structured clinical data is information recorded in a defined, machine-readable format, such as a coded diagnosis or a numeric observation, as opposed to unstructured free text or scanned documents.

The practical benefit is retrieval and reuse: a structured blood pressure reading can be graphed over time and flagged when overdue for review; the same value buried in a paragraph of prose cannot, without someone reading it manually.
